24 Hours and Counting...

In just 24 hours my boy will be in surgery. If we can get in, we hope to leave this evening for the Ronald McDonald House near the hospital as we will need to be at the hospital bright and early tomorrow morning and we live 2 hours away, as well as the fact that it sounds like we may be getting some heavy snow tonight. I am praying that there is an open room there.

Please pray that Jacob stays healthy for this surgery. Both Becca and Joe threw up last night and have upset tummies this morning. I will speak to someone at the hospital later this afternoon and let them know that Jacob has been exposed to a bug but I am thinking that they want to get this surgery underway as soon as possible so will probably go ahead anyway. Just pray that he doesn't get this either before or after surgery.

I will be staying in the hospital the whole week with Jacob. Ben will be shuttling back and forth between the McDonald House (if we can get in) and home with the kids. My parents and siblings will be helping out with the kids and animals as much as possible.

I don't have a laptop or phone connected to the internet, though the hospital has a library with internet that I may access towards the end of the week. I will be having either my mom or brother update this blog from time to time though so that you, my prayer warriors, can know what is going on.

I ask for you to pray for Jacob. I ask you to get his name out to as many prayer circles as possible. I ask you to prayer for his siblings and the rest of his family, so that we can be comforted by God's peace. Everything is so unreal right now and a nightmare. Just a few days ago we were preparing for Christmas and now we are preparing to fight for our little boy's life. Please help us in this fight.

  1. We will be praying. Can you call the RMH? When my son was in the hospital (he was in for about 3 months) we would call and get on the list. Maybe a thought?

  2. Hi Devon-
We put our name on the waiting list. They said that they go by day...so we should hear before noon if there is a room available tonight. If there is...they will book us for the whole week. If there isn't a room today, they will check for tomorrow, or the next day, etc. I'm praying there is an opening today or else we will probably stay in a hotel this evening.

  6. I've been trying to get the word out Beth! There are many people praying for your little guy! Also, at one point I heard that the hospital there has a floor inside the hospital for families to stay in - if there is room. Not sure if that is also the RMH or not. But something to ask. I think it is a good idea to go tonight. If you have to get a hotel, we have stayed at the Heartland Inn many times. Its very nice and you get a discounted rate if you tell them you are there as you have a patient in the hospital. They also have free transportation back and forth - its just a short way from the hospital. My husband has been hospitalized there twice and I've been there a ton of times so if there is anything i can do to help, let me know. Janice (in Indy)

  7. I will be praying for Jacob, the surgeon, doctors, nurses, and all of you. My 4yr old daughter is a Wilms' survivor, one year out of treatment (OT). I would love to offer any support or answer any questions you may have.

There are many links on my blog, too including a page that lists many of the Wilms' kids in treatment and those further down the road.

I would also recommend getting on the "Wilms Kids" message board/listserv at the ACOR site...

    http://listserv.acor.org/SCRIPTS/WA-ACOR.EXE?A0=WILMS-KIDS

It is a great place to ask questions and get support.

If you are looking for basic info to understand what is going on and about to happen, I would suggest starting at the CureSearch site. It gives you the protocols that all 200 of the COG hospitals follow.

I would love to help in any way I can. Praying for Jacob...

  17. Ugh, Elizabeth thiat just makes me sick to my stomach. I can't even fathom how you are feeling as his Mommy. Every time I read your posts it hits me like a two ton set of bricks again. Poor Jacob should NEVER know what the big C word is, or EVER have to experience the treatment for it is. No kid should have to go through that. He's just too young. While I am not going to pretend to understand why, as it is such a complex understanding, just know that HE is with each of you, and so are each and every one of your beloved readers. IF there is ANYTHING we can do for you, please feel free to ask. As difficult as it can be asking for help, now is the time love. Even if it is having a few dinners made in advance, or some help with gas money for driving back and forth, or somebody to watch the older kiddos so you AND dad can be with Jacob, please please ask dear. We are here for you. You've been so good to us, now it is OUR turn to show our appreciation for you. May God bless you and hold you all close, and guide each of the surgeons and nurses hands during surgery. May he hold Jacob close in safety and show his protection over his young spirit.

  18. Elizabeth, I am terribly shocked and saddened to hear this. I pray little Jacob comes through the surgery strong and healthy and that he will survive this cancer. We will keep him and your family in our prayers continuously. Hang in there. I am thinking of you. ~Maria
