Clean Can Be Green and Baby Can Be Comfy! (Giveaway!)

I have children and pets, which means that my house gets messy and dirty. But because I have those children and pets I feel a need to keep dangerous chemicals out of the house. I don't want to wash a counter with a cleaner that my children may set their food upon or scrub a tub with something toxic where there is a chance the residue may later be floating in the bath with the kids. Washing floors with chemicals means that the pets may get chemicals on their paws or the kids get it on their feet. Clean, in this day and age, does not mean safe.

What is a mother to do?

I've written before about making your own cleaners and will write about it again, I'm sure. But as a mother I also enjoy the convenience of ready made products as well. This is where natural cleaning products can fit in. Seventh Generation is my favorite company because from a business standpoint they truly believe in making safe products for both the family and the environment. I've used their dish detergent and fabric softener sheet quite often. So imagine my surprise when upon request Seventh Generation provided me with a "Natural Baby kit" for review.

These cleaners are ones that I feel comfortable using around the family and letting the kids help me clean with as well. And they work! They get the counters, sinks, tubs, and floors clean with botanicals! The disinfecting wipes are a lifesaver in a house with boys where I can just wipe the toilet seat, rim, and around the floor.

While I could do away with paper towels completely and save the earth even more I have to pick my battles and in a busy home I often find the need for a disposable towel more than a rag. I never tried the Seventh Generation towels because they looked stiff and non-absorbent but after getting them in this kit and testing them I will stick with them as they absorb great and are recycled. If you have to have paper towels, at least pick ones that are better for the earth!

Along with cleaners, Seventh Generation makes baby diapers and wipes. While I often use cloth diapers I also use disposables at times and have had great success with Seventh Generation chlorine free diapers. Remember my post about tampons and pads and the dangers of bleached cotton in those products? The same is true with diapers and Seventh Generation diapers are chlorine free. Bleaching cotton products can create dioxin and studies have shown a direct link between dioxin exposure and cancer, environmental and reproductive disorders. Why would we want that on our baby's bottoms for the first two to three years of their life? The wipes are also chlorine free, as well as free of dyes and fragrances. And the natural baby laundry detergent is perfect for sensitive baby skin.

The great part is that Seventh Generation products are easy to be found. I've found them in our local Hy-Vee and I have bought a case of the diapers on Amazon before, where the cleaners can also be found as well. So switching to natural products does not mean that you will be running all over town looking for them; they can also be bought from the comfort of your own home. I highly recommend joining the Seventh Generation Nation on their site where you can get coupons, special offers, tips, and their newsletter.

And now for the best part! One of you will get to win the exact same "Natural Baby" kit as I received above! It includes a package of diapers, tub of wipes, wipe refill, disinfecting multi-surface, disinfecting bathroom, disinfecting wipes, baby laundry detergent, all purpose spray, natural paper towels, and a recycled Seventh Generation bag! All you need to do is leave a comment on this post about whether you have tried Seventh Generation products before and what your favorite product is. Comments will be closed and winner will be picked on Monday, the 24th of May.

And if you don't have a baby, enter the contest anyway! Use the cleaners yourself and pass the diapers onto someone you know who has a baby, or save for an upcoming baby shower. What better gift then to introduce a new mom to healthy, natural products?

  1. Elizabeth,
I never tried Seventh Generation products and would LOVE to have a chance to try them. I have 1 new Grandbaby and 1 on the way in July so the diapers and wipes also would be a great bonus to give to one of my daughters. I am anxious to "Hopefully" win this offer and try such a safe product for my family and also the "environment." I love reading your blog, for being so young you have such good opinions about many things. Thanks for the chance.

  5. I have never used these products but would love to give them a try. I live in a small town and I know these products are not available here. I have an almost 2 year old and two dogs so I agree about not wanting harmful chemicals for them to get into.

  8. I use a ton of 7th Gen products -- baby wipes, diapers, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, disinfecting spray, toilet cleaner, bathroom cleaner, laundry soap, and paper towels. I think I've tried almost everything and like it all, but my favorites are the diapers and the wipes. LOVE 7th Generation!

    Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for informing people about 7th Generation product! I use their products to keep my pets safe and now that we have twins on the way we are planning on using their baby products. While we plan on using cloth diapers at home, we are planning on using the 7th Generation diapers while we are out and about. Thanks again for the information and the offer! I like the all purpose cleaner and use it every day in my kitchen...also got my mom using the products with her cleaning business!! -Michelle

  12. I use other natural and home-made cleaners but have never tried Seventh Generation. I've been thinking of giving their laundry detergent a go though, so this would be a good opportunity!

  13. I am really starting to like Seventh Generation products. I like that they disclose ALL ingredients unlike some other natural products. I are loving the disinfecting bathroom cleaner for our toilets!

  14. I have only ever used the dishsoap from Seventh Generation, but I really like it. A little bit goes a long way and around here, anything that stretches is a good thing..hehe

Going natural is something that I'd really like to do, but it seems like natural cleaners etc are always so expensive and even though it's better for us, sometimes it is more a luxury than a preference :)
Do you think that things like that being so expensive is because "going green" is a new fad?

    hugs

  15. Jessie-
The expense could be because it is the "new fad" but also because natural products are actually more expensive to produce. Chemicals can be made very cheaply but natural and botanical products cost the bigger bucks.
I do find that the natural products seem to be much more concentrated so you can use a lot less when cleaning, which actually saves money in the long run. An all-purpose natural cleaner can last me months whereas a chemical one only lasts a month or so. I recommend switching gradually (buy one item at a time) and looking for coupons. Signing up for the Seventh Generation Nation will net you coupons and so you can often buy their products for the same price that you would Clorox or other "typical" cleaners.

  23. I've tried a lot of their products...diapers, wipes, laundry soap, dish soap, fabric softener...

I think they were all pretty decent, but the dish soap was my favorite. The smells are all really nice...

I'd probably still use some of their stuff except for the fact I'm too cheap :P

  31. I wanted to introduce myself, my name is Archie Beaton- Executive Director of the Chlorine Free Products Association (CFPA). The CFPA is an internationally recognized standards and accreditation association founded in 1994 as a not-for-profit headquartered in Algonquin in the State of Illinois, USA

In our experiences there are many paper companies doing exactly the same mislabeling as the Body Care Products you have found lacking integrity. One example happened just this last month when recently one of our certified tissue mills bought up a competitor who made claims they were PCF (Processed Chlorine Free). As our auditing firm began working with the mill management and walked through these mills they found the plants didn’t and couldn’t meet the standards for PCF.).

The CFPA works with international experts involved in water, energy, carbon gas, and forestry conservation; raw material management; pollution prevention; government; environmentally preferred purchasers; academia; and corporate social responsibility. Our standards are dedicated to sustainable manufacturing and environmental practices improving industrial performance. All products are screened under the SMI (Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative) TCF (Totally Chlorine Free) – PCF (Processed Chlorine Free) using a Sustainability Index = Environmental Policy + Environmental Management + Mill Process + Forestry Certification + Environmental Risk Management + Product Stewardship + Public Information + Environmental Compliance + Employee Recognition

CFPA is a leader in acknowledging the need for third party chain of custody for raw materials, audits of processes and working toward promoting certified sustainable manufacturing process and products. The Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative (SMI TCF-PCF) guidelines provide real environmental value to the market. CFPA has no financial interest in the products it certifies, in any manufacturer, or company. www.chlorinefreeproducts.org
