My home is full of books. I took a couple pictures of two of our bookcases (and I apologize for the way they turned out but I just decided to snap a few shots and the lighting isn't the best). This is the one in the living room:
And this is one in the office:
Please don't judge on how disorganized the one above is - we just went through all our bookshelves last weekend and pulled books that we no longer wanted and I haven't gotten back to putting them back together again and organizing. That is a goal for this week.
We have another bookcase in the office, which is mainly filled with hubby's books and our homeschooling materials. I have a whole cabinet in the kitchen filled with cookbooks. We also have a bookshelf filled with children's books in the play room, and several piles of books throughout the house. Books are literally in each room of our house, whether I want them to be there or not!
I mainly collect non-fiction books, which in my house are mainly how-to books. Though in the first picture you can see my collection of Louisa May Alcott and Gene Stratton Porter books. I will pretty much read any type of book that comes my way, except tend to steer clear of horror (too scary!) and most romance books (though I do enjoy one now and again).
Elizabeth, it must be the time of year to clean out the office and our books. I do have a bookcase in the kitchen that is overflowing with cookbooks. In our office there are four bookcases of books that are very disorganized. I know where everything is but no one else does. My daughter and my son have their own books in their rooms and dh has claimed the downstairs bathroom as his "office". I too like Louisa May Alcott. I also collect Debbie McComber books and the Little House books. I have found some of her daughters books as well. I love the bio's of Laura Ingalls Wilder. You will also find non-fiction on my shelves. I am always looking for books that teach me how to save money. I have one whole bookshelf dedicated to just those books. The majority of those books were found at yard sales and library book sales. DH thinks that I have too many books. I think that he has too many tools. Hee hee. Unlike you I do like a good horror or a good mystery. As long as I can sink my teeth into a good book, I can read it anywhere and be happy.

I have very few books on shelves anymore. I have my Twilight hardcovers, my paperback version of Gone with the Wind and stuff like that, plus a large selection of cheesy romance novels BUT....
ReplyDeleteIn about August of 2008 my cousin surprised the heck out of me by purchasing and shipping to me a first generation Kindle (this wasn't long after they first came out) and since then I've stopped buying actual books on a very regular basis (unless I find something at Goodwill) and instead purchase them through Amazon's Kindle store or pick up a free one from then when I find one that looks interesting.
Jessa-
ReplyDeleteI have heard of the Kindle, but could never imagine myself using one. I love the feel of books in my hands, love seeing the books on my shelves. I can't imagine it being the same with a Kindle! :)
I love books, too! I usually get mine at the library, though. So I don't know how I ended up with crowded book shelves! I have everything from Dr. Sear's books to VC Andrews books to Sandra Brown to Jodi Picoult to Madeline L'Engle to Dan Brown to the Twilight series :)
ReplyDeletePS, I got Jayce's shirt today and LOVE it!!
I've always been totally book crazy. When I was a kid I would read anything I could get my hands on. These days I don't have (or make) a lot of time to read. There are a few Stephen King books I love (not the scary ones!) and some Anne Rice books. My favorite book ever is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. And, I love Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
ReplyDeleteI have two bulging (near collapse!) bookshelves upstairs in our "sitting area" that hold most of my books. One book shelf is for fiction (classics, mysteries, the complete old Nancy Drew collection, etc.). The other shelf holds nonfiction on many topics such as homeschooling, cooking, crafts, history, child care and the like. I used to have a massive recipe book collection, but pared that down alot to my very favorites, since you can find any recipe you need on the internet now. My kids have SO many books, many of which are either hand-me-downs from my childhood, or from such sources as garage sales or Better World Books (used books for cheap prices and FREE shipping!). They also have a couple of good sized stacks of books in their bedrooms. We are surrounded by books and spend alot of time every day reading and learning. I have always loved books and am happy that my children seem to have inherited that from me. :)

I also have tons of books, though not as many as I used to. When we moved from Texas to Brazil we only brought the most necessary items, and while several boxes of books were in that shipment, it is still not as many as we had before.
ReplyDeleteMy collection is wide-ranged -- I will read just about anything, from James Patterson (Alex Cross, anyone?) to Harry Potter and Twilight, to Jody Piccoult and Nicholas Sparks, and everything in between.
BUT -- I did switch to the Kindle and I love it. I switched so that I'd have availability of English books, never expecting to actually love the thing. But I do!! I have a leather cover for it, so it "feels" like a book, and it is so easy to read!!
Okay -one last thing: if you are going to be cleaning out and getting rid of books anyway, I'm having a Book Drive give-away on my blog at the end of the month. There's a button on my home page about it. So, if you do clean out your shelves, hang on for 2 wks before giving them away and you can enter my give-away : )
I love books. I will read just about anything. I rarely find a book that I will not finish. I have books every where. My daughters think we should count them. You have inspired me to want to take pictures of my own book shelves and blog about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm a book collector, too! I collect the original Nancy Drew books and everything by Agatha Christie.
ReplyDeleteI love reading. Right now I'm listening to an Agatha Christie on the treadmill, reading a Dean Koontz and listing to David Baldacci in the car.
I'm off to check out TexasHeather's book donation now ;)
