Tuesday's Topic: Food Control?

I'm sure by now you've probably heard about the Chicago school which banned lunches brought from home. If not, you can read this Chicago Tribune article. The Principal states that she is protecting the children from unhealthy foods they may bring from home by requiring them to eat the school lunches only.

This isn't the first time food control comes up. I've heard about extra taxes for soda or other unhealthy foods. What about the crazy lawsuits against fast food places where people claim they didn't realize overeating this type of food would make them obese and unhealthy.

Should there be rules/laws when it comes to food or is what we eat a personal right?

  1. I think taxing things that are unhealthy is fine by me. They already tax cigarettes and alcohol so soda and chips should be next on the list. Obesity costs taxpayers more money and what better way to fund the increased healthcare than by taxing the very items that cause it.

  2. Can't believe they are trying to regulate what a child brings from home in their lunch! If they want to help contribute to healthy eating replace the junk in the vending machines with healthier alternatives, get rid of the pop and replace with water, milk and juice.
As far as fast food restaurants ago, they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Many meals are higher in fat, calories, and salt than what the average person should be getting in a whole day's worth of food. And some meals in traditional restaurants contain thousands of calories and enough fat and salt for several days!
I believe the best way to promote healthier eating is by informing consumers of just what they are getting when they order food. Then we can make healthier choices if we want to. We still will have the freedom to make poor choices. So I believe that nutritional information needs to be a part of the restaurant menus. It might just be the wake up call that many of us need. Years ago, restaurant food was healthier, with smaller portions, and less additives. People were also much thinner. That isn't just a coincidence.

  3. I can't believe that a school would force the kids to eat cafeteria food... *shudder*
My kids bring much healthier food from home in their lunches than is often served at school.
I can't believe that people wouldn't know that fast food is unhealthy! It's not like McDonald's are making health claims about big macs...chicken nuggets on the other hand...I guess it does make you think.
