Tuesday's Topic

While I'm glad that the Royal Wedding is over (yes, I was one of those who could have cared less about it!) I do have to bring it up one last time. I've read several places that Kate omitted the word obey in her wedding vows. Many people thought that this was a wonderful thing as obey is outdated and shows what an independent woman she is.

Do you have an issue with the words obey your husband? Should a woman submit to her husband or is it an outdated custom that should be banished in our modern society? Does it suppress a woman or make a marriage work?

  1. First off, I watched the Royal Wedding and loved it. We have nothing here in the US that can compare. I would think a great many of women getting married today would not want the obey part in the vows. I know my daughter did not say those words. I imagine that 40 plus years ago, I did say those words and I'm sure they meant nothing to me. No I do not think a woman should have to obey her husband or submit if she doesn't want to. Little things don't matter-- like if my husband says call the dentist for me without saying please or could you, then of course I would do it because to me that is no big deal. If he told me I couldn't buy something (he never would), I would ask why and then make up my own mind. Really important things should be decided by both spouses and after talking things over you decide to do what he wants, then I would not consider that obeying or submitting. I guess I just think that no woman should have to be ordered around by a man or anyone else. And lets face it, in many cases, women are smarter and more sensible than men!

  2. If the Bible says obey your husband, then that is what I am going to do.

  3. The Bible says a woman should obey her husband.... In the Lord. If my husband asked me to do something I know is against God's will or law then I would not but other than that I would. Submission is strength under control. Women have a lot of influence over their husbands if they follow God's plan for marriage.

  4. The Bible commands us to obey them in everything and I have found the more I obey God's Word, the sweeter life becomes. As I obey my husband even in the little things, the better my marriage becomes. God knew what He was talking about when He gave us the Bible. He is our Creator and He knows what is best for us!

  5. To me there is more then just the act of obedience here. There is a good deal of responsibility on both parties. It is ESSENTIAL that the husband is living a life in submission to the Lord. And in turn lives a live that leads to serving Jesus first and secondly to bless his wife and family. If this is the instance then what follows is much easier for the wife to obey her husband because the decisions being made are ones that will bring honor to God and blessings to her and her family. So to me (as a man) the burden [or responsibility] is to make sure my life and decisions are not made from selfishness. I need to 'man up' if you will, and make God and my family first. Once that is my ambition then I can trust my [soon to be] wife to obey my leading, because I too am doing the same in obeying Jesus.

  6. The word "obey" was not in our wedding vows though probably not intentionally omitted. I believe a woman shows her husband care and companionship and loyalty not by saying a word but in her every action.

  8. I am an independent woman and my hubby is an independent man and I will not be submissive and neither will he that is what makes our marriage work is we respect one another and ask for each other's opinions and don't demand stuff from each other. A woman in today's society has every right to question and work just as a man does in our society. That was the whole part of the woman's rights to be treated as an equal to a man not be have to obey a man's every command and wish.
